Shades of MAPS – Indigo

The process of indigo dyeing is a mesmerizing journey of transformation. Originated over 6,000 years ago, indigo dye comes from the indigo fera tinctoria plant. When the leaves are fermented and oxidized, they produce a bright blue pigment perfect for dyeing.

Extracting the blue essence requires delicate handling; the leaves must first undergo a fermentation process to unlock the indigo’s potent color. As the leaves ferment, a chemical reaction occurs, leading to the development of the iconic blue hue that indigo is renowned for.

What sets indigo dyeing apart is its unique interaction with fabrics. When immersed, the fabric emerges initially with a greenish hue. This seemingly mystical phenomenon unfolds as the dyed fabric is exposed to the air.

Gradually, the green transforms into a deep, captivating blue – a phenomenon that showcases the magic of indigo dyeing.

In our latest collection, MAPS, we explored how indigo hues and geometric forms can be reimagined to represent maps. Our collection is an exploration into how indigo and maps can inspire new paths in the ajrakh craft.

The artisans of Kutch from Gujarat have helped us take something old and make it new again, blending tradition and innovation.

Indigo’s recent resurgence in contemporary fashion speaks to its enduring appeal. It’s journey from plant to fabric embodies the harmony between humans and the environment.
